November 2003, Surrey FA Lower Junior Cup 4th Round Having stood in the pouring storm and mud for over an hour awaiting the arrival of Hillcroft, nobody was in the right kind of mood for this game. As the referee's assessor had come all the way down, we felt it was necessary to play the match no matter what. With the match reduced to half an hour per half due to Hillcroft's lateness, the first ten minutes showed what we were up against. These guys are in the wrong cup - the first goal was a shining example of the beautiful game - starting with the right back, about seven passes, none further than 5 metres, culminating in a beautiful trap, drag and shoot by one of their tricky strikers. Fair play to Hillcroft, they would have outclassed any team that day, but questions must be raised over how a team comparable to Manchester United in skill level can play against a team comparable more to Farnborough Town in a cup supposedly split by ability. |
